Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo (Calgary Expo) is proud to announce that British acting legend, Sir Michael Gambon will attend Calgary Expo 2016. Sir Michael Gambon’s career spans such a wide variety of roles, including “Professor Albus Dumbledore” in the Harry Potter movies, “Henry Tyson” in Fortitude, “Philip Marlow” in the acclaimed The Singing Detective, “Thomas Holbrook” in Cranford, “Sardick” in the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas Special ‘A Christmas Carol’ and soon to be seen as “Godfrey” in the 2016 film Dad’s Army. He is truly an iconic acting legend, and a spectacular addition to the Calgary Expo line-up as we kick off our 11th year in Calgary.
MORE ON SIR MICHAEL GAMBON:
It’s hard to believe that the last Harry Potter book was published in 2007, and the final movie was released in 2011. It almost feels as if Harry Potter never ended, with the Warner Bros. Studio Tour constantly expanding in Watford, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter being such a huge success in Florida. Even the books are being re-released with new covers and illustrations, and new works are currently being developed that expand the story via film and stage. It’s true to say that JK Rowling has one of the most dedicated fan-bases in the world, and “Potter” isn’t going anywhere any time soon. As one of the most popular characters in the series, Sir Michael Gambon’s portrayal of “Professor Albus Dumbledore” has cemented him in the hearts of children and many adults worldwide.
Taking on the role of “Dumbledore” was a brave and challenging move for Gambon, stepping in after the tragic loss of Richard Harris. Yet from Prisoner of Azkaban onwards, Gambon certainly won the fans over and became ‘the’ “Dumbledore” to many. As someone who made their film debut in 1965 in Othello, it was heartwarming to see such success come so many years later for Michael, someone who had worked such a varied career up to that point. Harry Potter certainly wouldn’t be the last time Gambon worked with JK Rowling’s material as he then went on to appear in the television adaptation of The Casual Vacancy.
In juggling television, film and theatre for many years Michael Gambon has achieved a huge amount of success over all three mediums. BAFTA TV awards for Best Actor came for The Singing Detective in 1987 through to the most recent for Perfect Strangers in 2002, while numerous Laurence Olivier Award nominations came for 1979’s Betrayal right through to 2009’s No Man’s Land. Gambon’s career was recognized at the Evening Standard Awards in 2010 with The Lebedev Special Award for his contribution to British theatre, and at the British Independent Film Awards in 2012 with The Richard Harris Award.
In appearance for other hugely passionate fan-bases, Gambon took a role in the 2010 Christmas Special of Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol, and did something completely different in voicing a character for The Elder Scrolls Online. In more recent times, Gambon will be best recognized for his work on Sky Atlantic’s mysterious show Fortitude as “Henry Tyson” – or perhaps you even know his name from ‘Gambon,’ the last corner of the Top Gear test track! Wherever you recognize the face or the name, there’s no doubt that Sir Michael Gambon is a star of stage and screen and we are very lucky to be able to add him to our fantastic lineup for April 2016.
